Larkspur
Larkspur
In the early spring, I was eager to plant flowers, to transplant into my garden in the warmer weather. I bought a package of larkspur seeds and sewed them in a planter. As the weather got warmer, seeds germinated into a multitude of little look-alike seedlings. It was interesting to watch the seedlings develop and grow, until they were large enough to transplant into the garden. Directions about larkspur stated that the plants did not handle transplanting well. Since it had been my original plan to transplant them into a border of part of the vegetable garden, I transplanted them carefully anyway. I was pleasantly surprised that they tolerated being transplanted very well—none showed any signs of distress, continuing to grow and thrive.
As time went on, the plants did bloom, but only a few tiny white flowers—not the beautiful, large, colorful blossoms, that were on the seed package. In fact, these plants looked more like weeds to me. I realized that I did not know what larkspur looked like, and had just assumed that these plants were larkspur, because I had planted larkspur seeds in the pot, and these plants, all alike, had sprouted and were not like plants in the other pots.
So, I had come to the conclusion that these plants were not larkspur at all and were weeds! Was this a case of the seed packet not containing the correct larkspur seeds? That is why the plants endured the transplant so well! So, all those "larkspur" weeds were pulled up and thrown into the weed pile, to give space to the vegetables and flowers.
"Thus you will know them by their fruit"--It was not possible for me to discern that the plants were not larkspur, until the flowers developed.
So, it must be with our Heavenly Father, who lets the seed take root, and the plant develop. In this way, the weeds and plants grow together, until the weeds are exposed. Then He pulls them up and discards them. Let us not be weeds, but let the seed of God's Word grow within us.
Here is the "weed" larkspur, that grew in my garden:
